What is an Usher?
Ushering is a hospitality ministry of the church that plays an important role in liturgical ministry. Ushers are the ministers that welcome guests into Mass, assist them in finding seats, gather the collection and bid farewell to guests. They are stewards of Christ, and their commitment and time during Sunday Masses foster community building and parish growth.
What are the expectations/duties of ushers?
It is important that ushers maintain a warm and welcoming attitude, and are ready to help guests however needed. It is expected that during their monthly time commitment, ushers arrive 30 minutes early to Mass and stay late to ensure that the following duties are performed:
· Welcoming guests into the church
· Assisting guests in finding a seat
· Assisting during the collection
· Bid guests farewell and offer them a bulletin
· Tidy up the church after Mass
What is the time commitment?
Ushers can sign up to usher at one Mass per month, or more if they would like. Ushers should arrive at least 30 minutes prior to the start of Mass to assist in greeting and seating guests, and should plan to stay after Mass to tidy up the church. Ushers (both new and returning) are also required to attend one training session in the Fall, and will be notified of any other meetings.
